Never Loved At All



I loved her once,
More than anyone else
In the world,
I loved her once
To the Dark Forest and beyond.
After we parted ways,
I could barely endure the pain,
The agony of not seeing her.
I could not stand knowing
That never again would we walk
Tails intertwined,
Nor would I ever gaze into
Her beautiful eyes.
Yet finally, after many months,
She stopped torturing me
And became naught more than a bittersweet memory.
Then I loved again.
This one I did not love
So much as the last,
And she was forbidden, in turn,
To like me back.
I could not be with her day and night
Like I could the last,
And she dared not be with me
Any longer than necessary.
So when our worlds drifted apart,
My pain came again, but lessened,
And the wound seemed almost healed
When I remembered the first.
Now the first, more beloved face
Haunted me, rather than
The second,
Now their sweet voices both whispered to me
When I thought I was alone.
Why, when I was so close
To loving none
Must my first love
Return to me?
I thought that I was long over her,
That I would soon be over the second one too...
Now, I find myself
With a mate for whom I have no love
And burdened by a son
Who is ashamed of me.
I wish that I could have
Never loved at all.
